Getting Rid of Rogue Software

People these days know that an anti-virus program is needed to protect oneself from computer viruses. What a lot of people don't know is that computer viruses aren't the only thing to be afraid of. Recently, I have seen several cases of a piece of spyware called Anti-Virus 2008/2009. In this article I will explain what it is and how to get rid of it.

Difference Between Spyware & Viruses

The terms virus, spyware, malware, adware, etc are frequently used interchangeably, and they are pretty similar in the sense that we want to get rid of it if it's found on our computers.

To put it simply, a virus is a malicious program that was installed on a user's computer without their prior consent. This program does damage to the data or computer itself and automatically replicates itself by spreading over the Internet, email, or even removable media such as removable disks and CDs/DVDs.

"Spyware, by design, exploits infected computers for commercial gain. Typical tactics furthering this goal include delivery of unsolicited pop-up advertisements; theft of personal information (including financial information such as credit card numbers); monitoring of Web-browsing activity for marketing purposes; or routing of HTTP requests to advertising sites." (Wikipedia)

What is Anti-Virus 2008/2009?

Anti-Virus 2008 and Anti-Virus 2009 fall into a category called Rogue Software. Wikipedia defines this as "software that uses malware (malicious software) or malicious tools to advertise or install itself or to force computer users to pay for removal of nonexistent spyware. Rogue software will often install a trojan horse to download a trial version, or it will execute other unwanted actions."

Rogue Software alerts the users that they have anywhere between 4 and 400 viruses on their computer, when in reality, the only real threat is the program itself.

Getting rid of Anti-Virus 2008/2009

You may want to follow the steps in this article to disable system restore on your computer. We don't need your computer saving this piece of spyware before we try to remove it.

  1. Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.24 and install that program.
  2. Run the program's update function to make sure that everything is up to date.
  3. Run a full system scan and remove all threats that it finds.
  4. Repeat the full system scan until it finds nothing.
  5. Restart your computer and run a scan one last time.

Protect Your Computer from Future Infections

  1. Go to Windows Update and install any critical updates for your computer.
  2. Make sure that you have an Anti-Virus program installed on your computer. Also consider buying an Anti-Spyware program for added protection. You may buy the full version of Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or consider AVG Internet Security.
  3. Use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer whenever possible. Microsoft's Internet Explorer is known to have security flaws which often get exploited. Mozilla Firefox is a very safe and secure web browser. I have been using it for years.
  4. Use caution on iffy sites and never run a program unless you are sure what it is.
